The orange ring marks the only guy you're allowed to knock down right now — always the closest one still standing. Throw at anybody behind him and your spear bounces off. As each guy goes into the lava, the ring moves up to the next one.
That rule is on in both modes. What changes is whether knocking one guy over takes the rest with him.
